Getting sand out of the gears

I’ve had a travel blog for over 10 years. During those years I’ve mostly ignored it, especially after an initial burst of activity at the beginning of our trip to Asia in 2014-2015.

At one point along the way I decided to move it from a self-hosted setup to a managed platform to simplify things (sounds familiar). I did the migration with inexplicably little care, though, and ended up breaking a bunch of stuff. It also seemed to me like I lost most of the blog’s photos.

I had the originals saved on a hard drive somewhere, but they weren’t showing up on the blog anymore. Going back through and finding each image one by one, exporting the right resolution, re-uploading, and all of that seemed like a lot of work. I did it here and there, but never made a ton of headway.

Well. This morning, in a burst of motivation that I (in no small part) attribute to some freed up headspace from simplifying my personal blogging situation I decided to pull up my travel blog and just see how much of a train wreck it really was.

As it turns out, the images are all still there in the media library! I don’t know how I didn’t see this before, but whatever. There they are. All I need to do is update links.

I fixed up one post and it was actually super fun—not work at all. A little spark of joy hit me every time one of the previously-lost images popped up, full of memories and nostalgia.

Getting a little sand out of the gears can make such a difference.
